The Comedy Vlog
Times are changing on YouTube and if you aren't capable of creating original content, you better hope that you can take someone else's idea and make it better. People are constantly recreating the same types of videos because they see it working for bigger creators. Some you-tubers think that if you don't follow trends then you wont be able to get large amounts of views. Whether its making reaction videos or DIY videos you-tubers are always being very safe with the content they put out. It is very hard for new you-tubers to be successful without a unique idea or if they haven't sustained an audience from a previous platform.
One person who has been capable of taking his audience to YouTube and creating a brand new genre of videos is David Dobrik. Staring out on Vine, Dobrik was able to get a solid following on YouTube before other Viners jumped ship to YouTube. When he came onto the platform he came with the most unique style of vlogging that the platform has ever seen. Keeping his videos short and sweet with hilarious sketches and amazing chemistry with friends, Dobrik has now racked up around 6 million subscribers. This comedy vlog style is something that most people cannot copy, they either do not have the right personality or the right group of friends. The other problem that comes with this genre is youtubes new advertising policy, if your videos are focused around vulgar comedy it is very unlikely that your videos will stay monetized and YouTube will not promote your videos. Does this mean that Dobrik could be the first and last comedy vlogger? If nobody else can be successful off this genius idea it is likely that the comedy vlog will live and die with David Dobrik.
Luckily David creates these videos with his friends and they are also taking the youtube platform by storm. People like Jason Nash, Scotty Sire and even Josh Peck (yes from Drake & Josh) have been able to branch out on youtube because of David. You wont see there best performances on their own channels though. These guys put in a serious amount of dedication for Davids vlogs, because they know how special his content is. The only problem I see with this is, why is only one friend group making this amazing content. There are billions of people in this world but only one friend group can execute this style of vlog right now. How can this be possible?
I guess that's where I come in, I want to see more comedy vloggers. I want to see more people taking day to day life and creating jokes out of it. Its OK to script your life to make it more interesting, because by doing this you actually are enjoying life. Filming and recording a bit with your friends can be the most enjoyable thing if more people stopped taking vlogging so seriously. Every vlogger I see is trying to recreate the Casey Neistat formula or some other youtuber who has a boring life. We need more comedy on youtube and more collaboration, more friends filming wild stuff that wouldn't normally happen. I have made around 40 vlogs that were comedy and sketch based and youtube has now become my biggest passion, all because of one kid who decided to try something new. The youtube scene is getting so stale, but lucky for me and you David Dobrik has opend up a new door. I really think the comedy vlog style can be a bigger thing, we just need more creators trying to master it.
